Wednesday Wellness: Information at your Service

Happy Wellness Wednesday! I started writing about wellness topics on Wednesdays as I noted so many of my friends and creatives struggle with balance, as do I. Join me on my journey towards Wellness, along the yellow brick road, acknowledging all things shiny along the way.

One of my first jobs was working at the bookstore at the mall. I loved to work the Information Desk. It was a really neat way to be helpful and also learn things along the way. Many times somebody would ask me a question and I didn’t even know that I knew the answer until they asked. This continued as I moved on to the bigger flagship bookstore. I would put books on hold for myself, but after a few days return them to the shelves, as it seemed just thinking about them helped me realize what I needed to about them. Information was everywhere. So many books, so much information. It was my job to help people, but they were helping me, too. They were helping me develop my intuition.

I’m only just realizing that my current job (of twenty years!) is kind of like that, too. People come to me for assistance, and I assist them. They might ask me for information. I might know the answer, or I might know whom to ask to get the answer. I am providing information, as well as learning information. Sometimes still, I am able to provide the answer, not even realizing that I had already known the answer until that very moment. A little glimmer of a whisper in the back of my mind comes forth. And I am humbled.

The Doctor is IN

I am NOT a doctor. But I can help you find a book.

My dear friend Noel was a kindred spirit, and we both used to improvise playing piano.  When people said they liked her piano playing, she’d say “Isn’t it great? It’s the Holy Spirit!” She had a way of playing a song that is commonly known as “faking it.” There are Fake Books published, and this means the basic notes of the melody are noted and lyrics, but no other music is provided, only the Guitar Chords. It is an outline for the recipe of the song, if you will. There are many ways of making chocolate chip cookies, but in the end, they are all chocolate chip cookies. I love to improvise as I play piano, in fact, I even ignore the written accompaniment, now. If you listen hard enough, you can play the tune. You can play notes, or you can play music. You can follow a recipe, or you can make a cookie.  Are you with me?

So often something reminds me of something else.  Many times, I find myself looking for something, when, in fact, I find something else which I had been looking for before. Whomp, there it is.

Call it The Secret, the Law of Attraction, remote preparation, seek and ye shall find.

I truly believe that having an open mind allows one to perceive truths one might not otherwise recognize.

Everything in your life thus far has prepared you for the next moment. It’s synchronicity.

This afternoon as I drove around during my lunch break, the 80s station played that song “Pure Energy” by a group called Information Society.  Upon entering a place of business, I heard their radio station playing “Meant to Be” by Bebe Rexha.

What I know for sure, is that I am not yet aware of all that I already know.

What do you know?

Wednesday Wellness: Claim the Crown

Something my predominately Catholic Christian upbringing didn’t provide me was knowledge of the chakras energy system. As a result, I only discovered the chakras in the last ten years.  If you are not yet familiar with the chakras, may I suggest that you read renown spiritual author Deepak Chopra’s article on mindbodygreen.com.  Basically there are areas of the body which focus energy- centers of spiritual power.  Discovery of this thinking has opened my spirituality and deepened my poetry. The seven sections of my poetry collection A Maze in Grace follow a labyrinthine path around the chakras.

I happened upon crystals and stones quite by accident. I placed a cool stone on my forehead to release tension in my furrowed brow.  There’s a whole poem about this in my book. I’ve been thinking lately about how I was placing a crystal on my third-eye chakras, which is the center of intuition.  I have always been highly intuitive, and with that comes high sensitivity and overstimulation.  Sometimes I just have to turn the noise of the world OFF.  And there, my friends, is my anxiety and depression, in a nutshell.

I found that placing the cool stone on my forehead right before I go to sleep was so relaxing, it helped me sleep better. I could even place the stone under my sleep-mask, and it would be secure all night. Even in my sleep, I enjoyed the cooling effect of the stone, and its placement kept my intuition balanced. I wondered how I might be able to wear one during the day, and still be socially acceptable.

It occurred to me that new Wonder Woman had just the right jewelry to do so- in her tiara crown.

I started thinking more about tiaras and crowns in general, even thinking back to the many bible references to jewels and crowns. Wonder Woman’s tiara is traditionally worn across her forehead and includes the adornment of a small red star. Ruling royalty wore crowns to signify their stature, and I believe the jeweled crowns also were heavy, signifying the weight of responsibility in ruling with wisdom.

Suddenly I remembered a small lightweight tiara I had purchased but not worn for my young daughter’s superhero themed birthday party earlier this year.

I decided it was time put on my tiara and claim my power.

Take that, world!

Wednesday Wellness – Intuition

Hello, My Friends!

I decided to write about Wellness on Wednesdays, as I noticed so many of my writer friends and creatives struggle with wellness. As do I.  Join me on Wednesdays for wellness topics.

I have a strong intuitive nature, but I often have to try to “turn it off” in order to get through my day.  I don’t like certain images (often hiding posts from my Facebook newsfeed), and I can’t watch the news after a disaster.  An unfortunate side effect of this attempting to tune out is that sometimes I get out of touch with my own intuition.

Sometimes I can’t hear my own thoughts.  You know how sometimes you get two radio stations on the same frequency, it’s like that.  Some previous thought or memory is on loop while some other noise is interfering.  And I spend the entire lunch hour overthinking where I should go for lunch.

I am working on achieving balance this year.  I am letting go of things which no longer serve me, including possessions but also limiting beliefs.  I self-imposed a debt diet, and am counting my calories again.  And I am practicing meditation.  (I mostly make up my own meditations, but I like listening to guided meditations especially by Kris Oster and Rebecca Kane.)

At first I thought I didn’t want to enroll in a super cool online course, because the cost was outside of my debt diet.  I almost didn’t sign up.  But then I realized, it’s an investment in MYSELF, and my well-being.  And already I am so glad I signed up.

In another seemingly counter-intuitive move, I decided to NOT go to Mass last Sunday.  Now I happen to like going to church, but I certainly don’t judge people who do not.  But I decided we could use a little break. The kids and I met up with my dearest friend for a lovely brunch and then some playtime at the park.  And it was so well-making.

Are you in touch with your intuition?  How do you stay balanced?

Be Well,

Denise
